Upcycling Workshop, Saturday 3rd March

[Juice box wallet]

[Making a notebook]Around 25-30 adults and children enjoyed a free Up-cycling Workshop and café at South Oxford Community Centre, Lake Street, on Saturday 3rd March this year.

The session was led by Doireann Lalor, who showed us how to make:

[Notebook]notebooks out of
old cereal boxes →

juice-carton-wallet-1← wallets from juice cartons:

beads-2jewellery beads from magazines →

[Inner-tube belt making]← and belts from old inner tubes.

We had fun learning how to make nice things to keep ourselves or give away as presents.

It was great to chat with new people in the community and at the same time we felt good to be using things that would otherwise be thrown away!

Low Carbon South Oxford’s Creative with Waste group plan to hold a similar event, but with different items during the summer.

Greener Buildings event, 6th June 2011

On the evening of Monday 6th June last year, around 25 people met in the Duke of Monmouth pub on Abingdon Road, to hear four short talks from experts and lay people, with powerpoint presentations, samples of various types of insulation, a light-bulb library etc.  The topics covered were:

[Loft insulation][Underfloor insulation]

  • low cost and DIY greening your home
  • solar electricity
  • internal and external solid wall insulation
  • energy monitors
  • low energy light bulbs

The presentations were followed by a question and answer session and general discussion.
